“I see pictures of missing pretty little blonde girls all the time at truck stops. And you know why that is? It’s because they didn’t have a pistol.” – My dad

Jeff Straub · 2A Self-Defense Law:
“Yeah… the dad’s line is crude, but it’s not wrong. Predators hunt soft targets. That’s the whole point. And here’s the uncomfortable truth nobody likes to admit: Most women don’t tap into that ‘cornered-cat ferocity’ until it involves their kids, not themselves.
They’ll burn down the world for their child, but when it comes to their own safety they default to politeness, avoidance, or hoping the situation just doesn’t get worse. And predators know that. They bank on that.
A woman with a pistol or even just a mindset that she’s not going to be prey, breaks that pattern. That’s why the quote hits: not because the gun magically solves everything, but because it represents a shift away from being a target in the first place.”
⸻
Stephanie Sunshine:
“Jeff Straub that is well written and it is correct but the reason is also psychological as to why someone is a predator in the first place”
⸻
Jeff Straub · 2A Self-Defense Law (follow-up):
"That’s a good point, and I agree, predator behavior has its own psychological roots. But here’s the uncomfortable overlap: whatever made them a predator doesn’t matter to the victim in that moment.
A wolf’s childhood trauma doesn’t change the fact that it still eats sheep.
So we can analyze the psychology of how predators form and that’s valuable but on the ground, in real time, the only thing that matters is whether the target looks like prey or not.
That’s why mindset and capability matter so much: you can’t fix the predator in front of you, but you can absolutely change the category you’re in.
