Gun Rights, Food Rights, and the Difference Between Positive and Negative Rights

So I saw this TikTok of a woman way up in her Hollywood Hills, sipping her coffee like she’s filming an REI commercial, and she hits us with this deep thought:
“Why is it a God-given right to have guns but not a God-given right to have access to food?”
And honestly… come on.
This is what happens when feelings start pretending to be philosophy.
A right is something you have because you’re human, it doesn’t require anybody else to lift a finger for you. The right to own a gun is basically the government saying, “We don’t get to interfere with your ability to protect yourself.” That’s it. Nobody has to farm, ship, stock, or pay for anything for you to exercise that right.
Food, on the other hand? That requires actual people doing actual work. Somebody has to grow it, somebody has to harvest it, somebody has to drive it halfway across the country, and somebody has to sell it. That’s not a right that’s a supply chain.
You don’t get to redefine “rights” just because you want something.
If that’s how it worked, free Wi-Fi and bottomless Starbucks refills would be constitutional amendments.
And let’s be real, the irony is incredible. She’s delivering this “food should be a right” speech on a $1,200 smartphone a device that required more human labor, mined minerals, and global exploitation than the average bag of groceries. She’s surrounded by comforts that took an entire civilization to build, lecturing everyone about access to food like she’s living off berries and mountain dew collected from pine needles.
If she genuinely believes food should be a right, great go plant a garden and start handing it out. But don’t pretend the Constitution guarantees you free groceries the same way it guarantees you the right not to be defenseless if someone breaks into your home at 2 a.m.
Rights don’t require other people to work for you.
Free stuff does.
But hey… TikTok loves a dramatic question, especially when you can ask it from a mountaintop with a latte in your hand.
